RTW: Best Book in June

Reading Song of the Day: "You Are the Best Thing" by Ray LaMontagne

Due to popular demand, the ladies at YA Highway have brought back "The Best Book of the Month" Road Trip Wednesday topic! We couldn't be more excited :)

I'll keep this short and sweet b/c we have another book review in store for tomorrow and we know book reviews can sometimes be daunting. This month I read two books for the Debut Author Challenge and finished one that I started a while back. Since the other two already get their moments in the spotlight, I'm gonna name I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore the best book I read in June!

Interested? Check out what Goodreads.com has to say about it:

Nine of us came here. We look like you. We talk like you. We live among you. But we are not you. We can do things you dream of doing. We have powers you dream of having. We are stronger and faster than anything you have ever seen. We are the superheroes you worship in movies and comic books—but we are real.
Our plan was to grow, and train, and become strong, and become one, and fight them. But they found us and started hunting us first. Now all of us are running. Spending our lives in shadows, in places where no one would look, blending in. we have lived among you without you knowing.
But they know.
They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England. And Number Three in Kenya. They killed them all.
I am Number Four.
I am next.

This book is full of action and has an EPIC plot & premise. The writing is the not the best in the world and it won't win any Newberrys or Caldecotts...but if you are looking for a good, exciting, and fun read (and a cover that features the YUMMY Alex Pettyfer), then this is your book! Oh, and the movie was awesome, too :)

What was the best book you read this month?

Glad you liked it. I'm still on the fence about picking it up.

Interesting.

The premise sounds amazing, but what do you think of the whole James Frey "fiction factory" that put it out?

article here http://nymag.com/arts/books/features/69474/

Or for that matter, any of the authors who hire writers to realize their ideas because they "have too many", like James Patterson.

Am I getting too controversial?

Am I that person on the road trip that's bringing everyone down with the serious convos?

Haha, I'm with KO - I haven't been a fan of James Frey's actions whatsoever. That said, the book does sound pretty exciting.

Ack, the writing in I Am Number Four really put me off, although I did find it compelling enough to finish, at least. But I had an uncorrected proof version and my, my, there were a lot of errors. I know the emphasis is on 'uncorrected' but I wouldn't dream of submitting a draft like that.

Wow. And to think I never even looked up the real name of the author (I interviewed him, and infuriatingly, he answered the questions in character). I think it's appalling. In this factory atmosphere he can get away with having no writing skill whatsoever; it's an insult to the people who spend years trying.

KO, I think James Frey's logic was it worked for Francine Pascal.

I'm glad the book is good! I'm in the disappointed with James Frey club, though.

Did you see the movie, Pam? When I read I Am Number Four it really, really felt like a movie to me (and it makes sense in that article that the book and film were being developed simultaneously) so I wondered if it would be better onscreen?

Thanks for the comments thus far, ladies! Yes, James Frey is quite controversial and neither of us are fans of his fiction factory. The book is so not something you should read for the literary excellency, it's just fun--but Sarah, Pam did see the movie too, and it is a lot better onscreen!

I hear you ladies, as much as it feels 'icky' for lack of a better word, when I see the previews and the book I am totally intrigued.

The premise seems really cool.

I keep eyeing this one on the shelf...and drooling. I just need to break down and buy it.

Glad you liked!
